Delta and United Diss the NRA, are Guns the Next Harvey Weinstein?

Travel companies are running from the NRA faster than politicians whose committees had jurisdiction over Native American gaming ran from Jack Abramoff. United, Delta, Wyndham and now even the NRA‘s co-brand credit card issuing bank are distancing themselves. And the same theory of why things turned so quickly on Harvey Weinstein -- and communist domination of Eastern Europe -- may help explain why. Continue reading Delta and United Diss th

Last week I wrote about the games Hyatt Regency Aruba was playing to avoid offering award nights. Whereas a week ago there were generally no award nights available during low season when this category 6 property was pricing in the 200s, you can now use points when it‘s far more expensive. Rental Car Companies Drop NRA Discounts: Basic Business Judgment

Car rental companies didn‘t make this move before the school shooting incident in Florida. It wasn‘t a stand taken outside of controversy, it was a reaction to controversy. No matter how you feel about guns, rental car companies shouldn‘t be your hero or villain here. They‘re just making a business judgment not a social statement. First Class Awards to Asia for the Whole Family Using Star Alliance Miles

Star Alliance member Asiana is great for award availability. I‘ve always had good luck with space on the West Coast - Seoul flights in business class, and beyond to Southeast Asia and first class availability -- on the limited routes where it‘s offered -- is generally good too. Right now New York JFK - Seoul is served by a Boeing 777-200LR with no first class. However the Airbus A380 returns to New York at the end of March. The A38

Double Dip: Earn Hyatt Points and American Miles on Hyatt Place/Hyatt House Stays

When hotels began their loyalty programs a lot more attention was paid to airline programs. Guests were regularly given the choice to each points with the hotel‘s program or earn airline miles. Hilton made their name with the ‘double dip‘ giving you both points and miles, you didn‘t have to choose. Hotel programs have all grown up, and double dipping (earning styles) go away April 1. Hyatt though is offering its own doub

Chinese Travel Conglomerate Anbang Taken Over By Government, HNA Group Teetering

There‘s little transparency in large Chinese conglomerates. They‘re often layers of companies with unclear ownership and difficult to verify financials. Their leadership is often politically well-connected. At the same time regulation of these entities is unclear as well. When the Chinese government decides to take an interest in the operation and systemic risks posed by these companies which rapidly expand through acquisitions both

American Airlines is Changing How Their Safety Video Ends

Over time the American Airlines video will take on less importance on domestic flights. That‘s because the new standard domestic configuration does not include seat back video or drop down screens in the cabin either. However in the meantime the airline has made a minor tweak to the way the video plays on overhead screens, and in March the change will roll out to those aircraft with seat back monitors. Police Pepper Spray Air France Employees

Air France strikes are rarely worth covering. On any given day of course there‘s a threat of a strike. They‘re French. That‘s what they do. While much of the Air France KLM business has performed well, though not as well as peers, mainline Air France managed just a 1% operating margin in the fourth quarter. The Media Is Biased Towards Fairness But There Aren‘t Two Sides to This Story

Delta, American and United keep arguing that Emirates, Qatar, and Etihad accept government subsidies and that this violates the Open Skies treaties that the U.S. has signed with the UAE and Qatar. Only it doesn‘t violate those treaties. At all. Anyone that reads the treaties knows that. In the old Aaron Sorkin HBO series The Newsroom the cast makes an important point about journalism. American Discloses That Percentage of Seats Redeemed With Miles Fell - Again

American used to share a ton of information about the financials of the AAdvantage program in their annual 10-K SEC filing. They stopped doing that last year. They no longer tell us how many members there are in the program, how many miles were issued, sold to third parties, and remain outstanding like they did up until two years ago. Nonetheless as a result of their newly filed 2017 SEC 10-K form we know that the percentage of American‘s
